Course of Study and Organisation
The program involves about three-monthly theoretical online study terms, which alternate with practical internship terms of about the same length. It is organised in different modules consisting of learning units that are either compulsory or elective components of your schedule.
Core modules ensure a sound basic education, while the great range of elective modules offers the possibility to choose units according to your own interests. If you want to find out more details about the contents, workloads or examinations, please check the module handbook for New Study Computer Science.

Learning Environment & Tools
At New Study, we’ve designed a dynamic, interactive, and internationally-minded learning experience that blends strong academic foundations with cutting-edge tools and teaching practices. The program is in English, online and synchronous. All exams take place in Mosbach. Each semester starts with a couple of days where we see each other in person on location.
What We Teach
Our curriculum puts a strong emphasis on Mathematics and Data Science, and Algorithms alongside a progressive path in programming:
- Year 1: You’ll start with Scientific Programming, Web Engineering, and Java Programming.
- Year 2-3: You’ll deepen your expertise with Software Engineering and Advanced Software Engineering along with Databases.
- Students with German language skills and the ability to travel may also select electives offered in Karlsruhe and Stuttgart. Of course, New Study offers its own online, English electives as well.
- We welcome students from any DHBW location into our electives.
We also incorporate Design Thinking, User Experience (UX), and Artificial Intelligence (AI) into the program. AI tools are actively integrated into programming, writing, and other courses—students learn not only with AI but how to use it effectively and responsibly.
How We Teach
We support a wide variety of teaching formats—ranging from highly interactive workshops and project-based learning to frontal lectures (used sparingly) and hands-on exercises. Many of our instructors favor open teaching models that encourage collaboration, experimentation, self-efficacy and reflection.
- Most lectures are recorded, subject to instructor approval. We realise that many of our students have care-taking responsibilities and chose New Study to combine their duties with continuing study. They rely on the option of asynchronous participation in exceptional cases (sick children, etc.).
- Learning materials and formats vary by lecturer and course.

Tools & Platforms
We make use of a rich set of tools to support both synchronous and asynchronous learning:
- Moodle – our main learning management system
- Big Blue Button (BBB) – integrated video conferencing on Moodle
- Zoom – available within Moodle for additional functionality, including interactive whiteboards
- Miro Board – used for collaborative and creative work
A unique feature of New Study is our use of Discord moving to Elements (which we can extend ourselves). These community platforms facilitate cross-year interaction, peer support, and direct contact between students and lecturers. It fosters the kind of connected learning community that defines our program.
International Connection
New Study is not just for our enrolled students—we also welcome international incoming students via our virtual mobility offerings.
